about kingfisher

i adore kingfisher … particularly the white-colored …

as the name implies, it has a smart white collar around its shoulder.

Kingfisher has a very special look, a big beak but a short and stout body.  it gives a loud and sharp cry but is actually a very shy bird.  Usual hangouts are places near to water-bodies as its main diet is derived from the water source.  favourite food are small fishes & crabs.  It has superb eyesight and can dive well to catch them.  easy to spot them near swarmpy areas, riverside or even coastal areas, perching motionless on low branches overlooking the water bodies… waiting for a sumptuous meal …

human destruction of natural habitat…
2 days ago, while reading bangkok post… it says that these rare and beautiful kingfisher may be the first mammal to go into extinction at the turn of this century.  Reasons are human development (i call it infringement) into their nesting habitat.  Hugh acres of lands are developed into luxury units and residential areas which are once their habitat. sharing the same fate is the endangered species of turtle.
I hope nature and human can co-exist peacefully as we are all part of the ecosystem.  Destruction is within minutes and seconds while conservation efforts and awareness move like turtle’s pace.  And how can we bridge this big chasm of imbalance?  My best bet will be education.  Continue to raise awareness and believe that every little efforts by anyone matters!
